As a consultant, I'm asked to work with either an existing Web site, or with a new one.
Either way, we ensure that the site appeals to all of
its potential markets, engages its visitors with
content that
positions the credibility and expertise of the
business, and motivates them to respond as desired.
I achieve results with my clients on time and within
budget because I charge by the project, not by the
hour (with the exception of my one hour phone consult).
I really like working with decision makers who can
take action based on our recommendations. I enjoy
clients who "get" marketing and the Web as important
and exciting, and who are creative.
Often, my insights open up wider issues around the
overall strategy and marketing of the business.
Here are some examples of recent assignments:
This client’s Website needed a major overhaul. It
had over 500 pages of highly valuable in-depth
employment law information, but wasn't generating
leads for their main business - management training
programs.
We identified an entirely different market for the
site, which only exists online – employees
looking for
information about their rights. They're attracted to
the site because of its high quality content, but
aren't prospects for training. So we developed a set
of online checklists
and downloadable guides for both employers and
employees. These have become a new income source for
my client, as well as generating additional recipients
for their mailing list and newsletter.
We redesigned the home page to allow visitors quickly
to self-identify as employer / employee / media, and
to be directed to the appropriate content on the site
for them.
We also conducted ongoing, in-depth reviews of the
traffic reports for the site, as well as the keywords
and phrases entered into the internal search engine.
Based on these, we identified needs for new products,
programs and services by
my client.

This client asked me to review their Web traffic
reports and make recommendations about the
effectiveness of their site design and its usefulness
in terms of member needs.
We discovered that their reports weren't providing
anywhere near the level of information that's
possible. So they changed their provider and
implemented a much wider system of reporting.
In evaluating the available traffic data against
their business goals, we identified a number of areas
for improvement of the site, and some sections of
content that may not be worth their time and resources
to maintain.
We also explored a completely different home page
design that would allow visitors to self-identify into
their specific disciplines, and be directed
immediately to a section of the site designed for them.
This
would
dramatically reduce the amount of
content on the home page, which was quite confusing, and
causing frustrated visitors to leave.

This is a very successful firm, but which has to date
done very little marketing, and has a poorly designed
and ineffective Website. The CEO saw me present at an
Executive Forum, and asked me to advise on reworking
the site.
However, the marketing budget is still extremely
limited. It is clear that a major challenge in this
project will be to prove that the Website can generate
meaningful leads and business for the company, and is
therefore worth further and
greater investment.
To be continued . . .
